Uric acid, total cholesterol and hemoglobin each tell us something different about the body. Understanding what each test measures can make home monitoring more meaningful.
Three different tests — three different purposes
Uric acid, total cholesterol and hemoglobin should not be treated as interchangeable readings. Each parameter measures something different and needs to be interpreted in its own context.
Uric Acid — UA01
Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines. Monitoring can help users follow changes when uric acid is being watched over time.
Total Cholesterol — TC01
Total cholesterol measures the overall amount of cholesterol in the blood but is not the same as a full lipid profile.
Hemoglobin — HB01
Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells. The value alone does not explain the cause of an abnormal result.
What does a uric acid reading tell you?
Uric acid reflects the balance between how much is produced and how effectively it is removed from the body. It is often discussed in relation to gout, but an elevated reading by itself does not automatically mean a person has gout.
A single home uric acid reading should not be used by itself to diagnose gout or decide whether treatment is required.
What does total cholesterol tell you?
Total cholesterol is one useful measurement, but it does not separately measure LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol or triglycerides. Cardiovascular risk assessment also considers other health and lifestyle factors.
A full cardiovascular assessment can include LDL, HDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, age, family history and other clinical factors.
What does hemoglobin tell you?
Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. A low or high reading can have many possible explanations, so the number alone does not identify the cause.
If a result is repeatedly outside the expected range, especially with symptoms such as unusual tiredness, weakness, dizziness or shortness of breath, seek medical advice.
Why context matters for all three
- Use the correct compatible strip.
- Follow the Instructions for Use for that specific test.
- Record the date, time and relevant circumstances.
- Watch the pattern rather than focusing on only one number.
